Attendance

Punctual daily attendance is necessary for student success. Regular attendance promotes a sense of responsibility, ensures educational continuity, and facilitates academic growth. Research shows that “for every day a child is absent from school, he/she falls behind two days in learning.” The Ocean Springs School District is strictly enforcing a new attendance policy this year. Students are only allowed two parental absences per nine weeks grading period. Parents must notify the school prior to or on the day of the student’s absence. All other absences require medical or legal documentation. All documentation must be submitted on the day the student returns to school.

For further details on the OSSD attendance policy, please refer to page 15 in the 2014-2015 Elementary Handbook

ALL STUDENTS MUST BE IN CLASS BY 7:45

NO CHECK-OUTS AFTER 2:30

Parents—Students may enter the building each morning at 7:15. A student will be considered tardy if he/she is not in the classroom ready for instruction at 7:50. Punctual daily attendance is necessary for student success. Being on time ensures that the student is properly accounted for in the morning attendance report and allows the student to hear important morning announcements. Punctuality by all students prevents disruptions for the teacher and other students in the class. Excessive tardiness is considered more than 5 tardies in a nine week period. Administrative action, including referral to the County Attendance Officer and/or Department of Human Services, may be taken. Please make punctuality a priority and help us ensure your child gets the education he/she deserves. Your commitment is required. Thank you in advance for your cooperation in this matter.

If your child is a car rider in the morning and wants to eat breakfast in the cafeteria,he/she MUST be at school no later than 7:35.

¨ If possible, please put your child on the bus.

It will definitely eliminate our traffic problems in the mornings and in the afternoons.

We must have a transportation agreement on file for every student.

Check-Outs

Students will not be called from class for early check-outs after 2:30 p.m.

The time when we are preparing for and loading students on buses and into parents’ vehicles is extremely sensitive. Every possible step must be taken to ensure the safe dismissal of all students. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.
